A 3D Glasses Explanation

I was asked the other day about 3D glasses and why couldn’t the ones in the cinema be used to see 3D photos that were in the Advertiser.

I explained that there were 2 different categories of 3D glasses 

  • Passive
  • Active

Active 3D glasses interact wirelessly with images on a screen to enhance 3D viewing, whereas passive glasses do not.

Passive 3D glasses have been around since the early 20th century.

Passive 3D glasses are themselves divided into two major subcategories: anaglyphic and polarized glasses.

Anaglyph glasses have the red and blue lenses.

Anaglyphic 3D works by projecting two identical but slightly offset images on a screen, each image tinted with a different colour.

To the naked eye, an anaglyphic image appears blurry, with reddish and bluish hues.

The glasses use colour-filtering lenses to target one image to the right eye, and another to the left; the result is that each eye sees a different image, but the mind is tricked into believing it sees only one.

The mind will compensate for this by focusing in between the two offset images and blending them into one, which creates an illusion of depth.

Passive polarized glasses operate on the same basis as anaglyph glasses, only they filter light waves rather than colour.

Two identical and slightly offset images are superimposed, except in this case each image is polarized to project light differently than the other.

With polarized 3D glasses, each eye only processes one image. 

However, the mind is tricked into blending the two images into one, creating a 3D experience.

Unlike anaglyphic 3D, which can be projected from any screen, polarization 3D works best with screens able to relay different light frequencies without sacrificing picture quality.

Now with LCD technology in 3D TV sets, which transmits images at high speed, 3D glasses have come on tremendously.

However I still think it's a fad , producing a below average image that is dark to view.

The only upside is if you want to buy the best television set currently , buy a 3D set , not for the 3D image but for the regular image.

Is The Future 3D - Probably Not

Everybody gets excited with the use of 3D in television and cinema currently but there are a few in the tech community that use the F word when it comes to 3D and that word is fad.

Let me explain, the best television displays currently for true high definition viewing is 1920 x 1080

In the cinema, digital projectors currently display movies with 2048 pixels of horizontal resolution by 1080 pixels of vertical resolution at 24 frames per second, that is known as 2K .

So what would happen if we increased the resolution, a sharper clearer image would now be shown.

The next evolution of cinema and television displays is 4K , which is 4096 pixels of horizontal resolution by 2160 pixels of vertical resolution

With double the lines of resolution a sharper, clearer picture is now shown.

Would you notice the difference? Yes you would.

Remember the first time you viewed a normal DVD and then a Blu-ray DVD on a hi definition display. Think of that as twice as clear now.

So increasing the resolution is only the first step, currently the main frame rate for making movies is 24 frames per second, now by boosting the frames per second from 24 to 60 will result in a “true life “image representative of real life and the best bit, “ no glasses required.
