Infected With Virus's / Malware , Here Are Some Solutions

Are you infected with Virus's / Malware?

So how would you know if you have spy-ware?

  • The computer has become slower.
  • Boot time dramatically increases.
  • Your home page has changed.
  • Tool-bars appear that you didn't download.
  • Windows Update stops working
  • New Items suddenly appear in you favorites
  • You search engine changes

So where to from here.

Firstly if using Windows XP , Vista , Windows 7 scan your computer with your antivirus software.
If it has been disabled, try and start it and scan your system.

Still wont start ,then you will have to start your computer in Safe Mode.

How To Start Windows In Safe Mode

Once on safe mode then try and scan your computer.
Check if you have open ports on your system by going to GRC.com and go to ShieldsUP and running the program ShieldsUP
If it shows open ports that are a vulnerability ,then try and close these ports in your firewall setup.

Next you have 3 options

Option 1

Run the Microsoft Safety Scanner from Microsoft

Download to a usb flash drive from another computer and install and run on the infected computer.

Follow the on screen instructions and action the results.

Option 2

Run the Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper

You will have to install and make a DVD on a clean computer

You then boot the infected computer with the DVD which will run and check for virus / malware / rootkits on your computer.

Option 3

Format and reinstall your operating system.

This is the only guarantee that you have that all traces will be removed.

When reinstalling put on Microsoft Security Essentials if you are running Windows XP and your antivirus of choice.

I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials if you don't want to pay and Nod32 if you do want to pay.

If you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista Microsoft Security Essentials  or Nod32 should be sufficient as they are much more secure operating systems.

If you have been infected remember it is your fault so check out my other article at Virus and Spyware Prevention

Check Computer Security - How Open Are Your Ports?

Ports are an interface that are used to communicate between the computer , other computers & devices that connect with the computer.
If you have the wrong ports open on your computer , you may have a security risk.
If you are concerned about computer security it is worth paying a visit to Shields Up at GRC.com
You will then be able to run a scan of your computer and see if you PASS the test for open ports on your computer.
If you do not pass then it is worthwhile checking your firewall settings to close these open ports.
