Maintenance On An Apple Computer

On a Windows computer there is always something to do especially if you are running Windows XP

  • Disc Cleanup
  • Checking Windows Update - don't forget the optional updates
  • Virus Scans
  • Defrag (if on Windows XP)
  • Stopping programs from loading - MSCONFIG - just Google it

So what do you have to do on an Apple computer?

Updates to the operting system Lion , Mountain Lion etc available should be visible when they appear as per below.

Occasionally if you are having issues repair disc permissions through disc utility in the utilities menu.

Thats it.

Registry Cleaners & Driver Updaters Really Annoy Me

Lately I am seeing a resurgence of people using registry cleaners and driver updaters that promise the world but rarely deliver and in some instances can do some damage or if you have downloaded one from an ad , it can infect your computer with malware.

The ones to especially steer clear of are the ads on the internet that offer to scan your computer.

The windows registry is a database that windows and its software uses to store settings in.

If your computer is running that bad or slow that you think you may need a registry cleaner then you would be better off reinstalling your operating system.

Problems With Windows Let Microsoft Fix It

If you are having problems with Windows ( 7 , Vista , XP )  and don't want to reinstall ( which should be the preferred solution ) there is a solution from Microsoft

Microsoft have the Microsoft Fix It Center Online

After installation it will scan your computer to diagnose and repair problems then it will attempt to fix the issues it has found.

This has proved especially effective for me with Windows Update issues on clients computers.

This is well worth a look for some issues but if you are heavily infected with malware/virus then a reinstall of the operating system is your best choice.

Online Storage & Sync Your Documents With Dropbox

I have always been a big user and advocate of Dropbox which allows you after installation to have 2GB free of storage on the Dropbox servers and if you refer another person then you get a bonus of 500MB for every person that installs Dropbox up to 16GB.

With Dropbox you have your files on your computer in your Dropbox folder and duplicated "in the cloud" on the Dropbox servers.

Change a file on your computer , in your Dropbox folder and it is changed and synced on the Dropbox servers.

You can install Dropbox on multiple computers and when you change a file on one it is changed on all your computers.

This " syncing " is done when the computers are connected to the internet.

The Dropbox folder can be stored anywhere on your computer but is normally placed in your My Documents folder.

Dropbox can be run on Windows , Apple , iPhones , iPads , Android

On portable devices you install the app then you have access to your files that you have in your Dropboxfolder.

I like Dropbox for it's ease of use and it's syncing capabilities.

Are There Hidden Partitions On Your Computer?

I have seen hidden partitions on peoples computers that can be hiding various unwanted malware etc.

If you have multiple hard drives or partitions , look for restore partitions first ( don't delete or format that) but the ones to look for are the ones that are a few megabytes in size.

So how do you find the partitions?

On your start menu , right click on computer and click on manage

This will open Computer Management

Click on Disk Management

You will then see all the various partitions on your computer

Remember be careful when doing this but it can highlight a problem area for you as many virus infections can manifest themselves into a small partition on your hard drive.

EaseUs have a free partition manager which will also show the partitions on your hard drive but remember if you dont know what you are doing leave it alone.
